A circuit breaker that keeps tripping can be frustrating, especially in aftermarket DC systems where accessories are added over time.From auxiliary lighting and compressors to pumps, fans, and RV electronics, increased demand often pushes a 15 amp circuit to its limit. When this happens, the first assumption is often a simple upgrade: Can a 15 amp breaker be replaced with a 20 amp breaker?

<h2>Can a 15 amp breaker be replaced with a 20 amp breaker?</h2>
In most cases, not unless the entire circuit is rated for 20 amps.
A circuit breaker is not just a resettable switch with a labeled current rating. It is an overcurrent protection device that protects wiring and connected components by interrupting power from excessive current during overloads and fault conditions.
Installing a larger breaker without checking the rest of the circuit can create a dangerous condition where the breaker allows more current than the circuit was designed to handle.

You can only replace a 15 amp breaker with a 20 amp breaker if the entire circuit is suitable for 20 amp operation. That includes:

<li>Wire gauge, wire length, and insulation temperature rating</li>
<li>Breaker voltage and interrupt rating</li>
<li>Terminal and connector ratings</li>
<li>Switch, relay, fuse block, or distribution block rating</li>

If any part of the circuit is only suitable for 15 amps, the breaker should not be upsized to 20 amps.
A larger breaker does not make the circuit stronger. It only increases the current allowed before it trips, which can leave wiring and components unprotected.

<h2>Wire Gauge Comes First</h2>
In automotive, marine, RV, and equipment circuits, the breaker’s primary role is to protect the wiring, not just the connected devices.
If the wire is only suitable for a 15 amp circuit, replacing the breaker with a 20 amp version may allow the conductor to carry more current than it should. That can lead to overheated insulation, damaged connectors, burned terminals, excessive voltage drop, or intermittent equipment operation.
In low-voltage DC systems, wire size affects both safety and performance. Undersized wire can overheat, but it can also create voltage drop that prevents pumps, compressors, fans, actuators, radios, and electronics from operating correctly.
Before moving from a 15A breaker to a 20A breaker, confirm that the wire gauge, wire length, terminals, splices, and connectors are all rated for the higher current.

A breaker that keeps tripping is not always the wrong breaker. It may be doing exactly what it should do.

<h2>The Load May Be the Real Problem</h2>
A breaker that keeps tripping is not always the result of a defective unit or insufficient rating. In most cases, it is functioning correctly and disconnecting power in response to an overload condition in the circuit.
Common causes include:

Before upsizing the breaker, check the actual load current and compare it to the circuit design. If the normal operating current is too close to 15 amps, the circuit may need to be redesigned, not simply fitted with a larger breaker.

Sometimes, but only if the entire circuit is rated for 20 amps.
Do not replace a 15A breaker with a 20A breaker just to stop nuisance tripping. The breaker may be warning you that the circuit is overloaded, undersized, damaged, or exposed to too much heat.
A 20A breaker may be the right choice for a properly designed 20A circuit. But if the circuit was designed for 15 amps, upsizing the breaker can allow too much current to flow before the breaker opens.
The safest approach is simple: Find the reason for the trip, then size the breaker to the circuit.

High-current DC circuits need more than basic overload protection. In RVs, marine systems, emergency vehicles, and other heavy-duty applications, a main feed or auxiliary power circuit may need to handle large loads while still remaining serviceable after a trip.The OptiFuse <a href="https://www.optifuse.com/circuit-breakers/high-amperage-heavy-duty-circuit-breakers-44/304/">353</a> Series is a high-amperage, manual-reset circuit breaker built for these demanding DC applications. The 353 is a Type III manual reset breaker. That means when the breaker trips, it stays open until someone manually resets it.

Not every overcurrent condition is a true fault. Some circuits draw a brief surge of current during startup, then settle into normal operation. Motors, transformers, power supplies, and capacitor-input circuits are all common sources of temporary inrush current.That is where a time-lag fuse becomes important.The OptiFuse<a href="https://www.optifuse.com/fuses/electronic-glass-ceramic-fuses-39/252/"> TSD / TSD-P</a> is a 5x20mm glass tube fuse designed specifically for circuits that need IEC-style time-lag protection. It helps tolerate short, harmless inrush events while still opening when an overcurrent condition lasts too long.What makes the TSD series especially important is not simply that it is a slow-blow fuse, but that it is designed around IEC 60127 standards. That makes it a strong choice for electronic equipment and industrial designs built to international miniature fuse specifications.

When choosing a 5x20mm tube fuse, physical size and amp rating are only part of the selection process.
Two fuses may look similar and carry the same current rating, yet still be evaluated to different standards. For comparison, the <a href="https://www.optifuse.com/fuses/electronic-glass-ceramic-fuses-39/257/">OptiFuse TSC</a> is also a 5x20mm time-lag glass fuse, but it is tested to UL 248-14 and CSA C22.2 No. 248.14. ne of the major differences is how each fuse’s overload performance is verified.
The TSD is tested differently because it is built around IEC 60127 requirements. Instead of only looking at 135% and 200% overload points, as tested by UL 248-14 standards, the TSD was tested on IEC-style time-lag performance at 210%, 275%, 400%, and 1000% of rated current. For ratings from 125mA to 10A, the TSD must open within 2 minutes at 210%, between 600ms and 10 seconds at 275%, between 150ms and 3 seconds at 400%, and between 20ms and 300ms at 1000%.

This distinction matters because the standard defines how the fuse is evaluated, not just its physical size. A 5x20mm time-lag fuse tested to UL 248-14 is not automatically interchangeable with a 5x20mm time-lag fuse tested to IEC 60127. The correct selection depends on the equipment standard, agency file, bill of materials, and the approvals the final product must maintain.
The interrupt rating structure is also different. The TSD uses an IEC-style interrupt rating of 35A or 10In, whichever is larger. The TSC lists interrupt ratings by current range and voltage, including higher interrupt ratings at certain 125VAC and 250VAC conditions. This is another reason engineers should avoid selecting by physical size and amperage alone.
In simple terms, the TSD is the better fit when a design calls for an IEC 60127 5x20mm time-lag fuse. The TSC is the better fit when the design calls for a UL 248-14 / CSA C22.2 No. 248.14 5x20mm time-lag fuse.

A common application for the TSD is AC input protection on small power supplies, such as control power supplies, adapters, and electronic equipment with capacitor-input circuits.
When power is first applied, the input capacitors inside the power supply draw a short surge of current as they charge. This is normal startup behavior, not necessarily a fault. A fast-acting fuse may open during this brief inrush event, even though the circuit is operating correctly.

An in-line fuse holder puts the fuse directly into the wire run, so the protected circuit can be fused close to the load instead of forcing everything back to a centralized fuse block.
A good real-world example is a car audio hobbyist adding a dedicated fused power lead for an amplifier turn-on circuit, signal processor, or accessory feed. In that kind of install, the goal is usually not to build out a full fuse block for one small branch circuit. It is to add clean, localized protection directly in the harness, with a holder that stays serviceable if the fuse ever needs replacement. That same approach also applies to aftermarket lighting, dash electronics, radar detectors, cameras, and other integrated automotive accessories.
